Mattress Nerd's Sustainability Scholarship


  • All applicants must be enrolled, or due to be enrolled, as a full-time student at an accredited US college or university for the semester that they are applying to receive the scholarship. 
  • Applicants are not required to have a minimum GPA. 
  • Applicants are not required to have a specific Major.
  • Domestic, international, and undocumented students may apply.
  • Students attending online universities are welcome to apply.
  • Applicant must be someone who is promoting positive environmental change


 Please write a 500-1,000-word essay answering the following questions

 What choices can we make as consumers to better our carbon footprints? 

  • What reuse and recycle innovations do you think are leading the change in business environmental conscientiousness?
  • What have you altered about your own day-to-day life to reduce your own environmental impact?

 Please submit proof of enrollment or an acceptance letter in an accredited learning institution. We will accept a recent transcript, acceptance letter, or tuition bill. Please note: if you are in the process of applying for colleges and universities, please indicate your current school and submit a document with the schools you have currently applied to. If you are selected for the scholarship, we will ask you to provide proof of enrollment for your college or university at that time.

The goal of this contest is to help middle school and high school students become familiar with the scholarship application process earlier in their school career and proactively understand and prepare for their future college costs.

Cyprus Credit Union Scholarship

Cyprus Credit Union is pleased to offer a college scholarship for select Cyprus members who are high school seniors.

Cyprus Credit Union members who meet the following criteria are eligible for the scholarship:

  • Is a Utah high school senior
  • Is a member of Cyprus Credit Union (see www.CyprusCU.com, membership is open to any Utah resident)
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the last two terms
  • Plans to attend an accredited college, university or trade school
  • Dependents and relatives of Cyprus Credit Union members are eligible

American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarship
Applicant Eligibility Requirements:

  • Open to high school seniors who are U.S. citizens or legal residents.
  • Scholarship payable to the winner's college/university or certified trade school in the United States.
  • Student must enroll in semester beginning no later than Fall 2020.
  • Winners not based on financial need.
  • Relatives of AFSA staff or board members may not enter.
  • Home-schooled students may apply as long as your course of study is equivalent to that of a senior in high school.

David Eccles School of Business - Opportunity Scholars Program
Qualification for the David Eccles School - Opportunity Scholars Program and scholarships:

  • First Generation: Your parents have not attended or graduation from a four year higher education institution. You are first in your immediate family to attend college.
  • Underrepresented: You are from a social group that is underrepresented in higher education.
  • Need: You have a demonstrated financial need as evidenced through federal student aid.
  • Residency: You are a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
  • GPA: Grade point average is greater than 3.0. Continued eligibility in the program is dependent on maintaining a GPA greater than 3.0.

Dream Weber
The Dream Weber program provides free tuition and general student fees to students whose annual household income is $40,000 or less. How is this possible? The Dream Weber Program uses a combination of federal and state financial aid and money given to the university from generous donors. The purpose of the Dream Weber Program is to help you complete a college degree - which will improve your earning potential throughout your life.

To be eligible for the Dream Weber Program you must:

  • Be a legal Utah resident
  • Have a household income of $40,000 or less
  • Qualify for the federal Pell Grant funds
  • Be an undergraduate student with less than 15 credit hours

UAIIA Scholarship
The Utah Association of Independent Insurance Agents is offering a minimum of three scholarships ranging from $500 to $2000 in 2020 to Utah high school seniors who have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA and are active in extra-curricular activities through their school, church, community or work.  Financial need by applicants may also be considered.  The requirements are:

  • complete the application
  • submit financial information (any information disclosed will be kept confidential)
  • submit transcript of grades
  • submit recent photo ( This will not be returned.  If you are selected, this photo will be used for news releases or for publicity articles.)

Walmart Associate Dependent Scholarship
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident of the United States.
  • Must be a dependent of an associate of any division of Walmart who has been actively employed with Walmart for at least 6 months, as of April 2, 2020
  • Must be a high school senior graduating by July 31, 2020
  • Must have financial need and be able to demonstrate the need with required documents.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • Must enroll for Fall 2020 as a freshman/first year student in a full-time program of study at a two-year or four-year college or university.  The school must be a accredited US institution.  Military academies are NOT approved institutions.

Camp Cardiac, Camp Neuro and Camp MD at the University of Utah
Camp Cardiac, Camp Neuro and Camp MD are 1-week summer day camps open to all high school students at least 15 years and older.  These camps provide an excellent starting point for careers in all fields of medicine.  Camp Cardiac will be July 13th-17th,  Camp Neuro will be June 8-12th, and Camp MD is July 27th-31st. They are at the University of Utah School of Medicine.  Standard application and tuition for Camp Cardiac and Camp Neuro is $525.  Camp MD tuition is $240. Scholarships are available.

AFSA National High School Essay Contest
The AFSA High School Essay Contest is an outreach initiative of the American Foreign Service Association. Established in 1999, the annual contest encourages students to think critically about a topic of global significance and the key role diplomacy plays in connecting people and ideas.

This year's contest is about why diplomacy and peace-building matter.  The 2020 winning essayist will receive a $2,500 cash prize, an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to meet the Secretary of State, and full tuition for a Semester at Sea voyage (once the student is enrolled at an accredited university). The runner-up will win a full scholarship to participate in the International Diplomacy program of the National Student Leadership Conference.

Eligibility: Must be a U.S. Citizen. "High school" refers to grades 9-12. Students whose parents are in the American Foreign Service are not eligible.

In a 1,000-1,250 word essay essay identify how members of the Foreign Service work with other civilian parts of the U.S. Government to promote peace, national security and economic prosperity.

Utah Energy Workforce Scholarship Program
To participate in the scholarship program, a student must submit a 5 minute documentary film exploring some aspect of Utah's energy industry.  Topics may include the following:  conventional or unconventional fossil fuel production or processing; alternative energy resources including nuclear and renewable resource development; energy efficiency or conservation technologies or programs; and finally, electricity and natural gas utility facilities and operations.  Five scholarships will be awarded, one to a student in each of Utah's four Congressional districts.  The $4000 scholarships will be awarded to students who intend to pursue a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) related course of study at a Utah institute of higher education.  There are also five scholarships for up to $2000 for students attending a Utah technical college.

 - Must be a 11th or 12th grade student
 - Must certify your intent to pursue a STEM course of study at a Utah institution of higher education
 - Scholarship dollars may only be utilized at a public or private institution of higher education located in Utah

Select Health Scholarship -SLCC
The SelectHealth Scholarship is a two-year full scholarship for freshman Hispanic and Latinx students with demonstrated financial need at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) who are interested in a career in healthcare. In addition to paying for an awardee’s education, SelectHealth invests in each student’s personal and professional growth. Students who earn this scholarship will have the opportunity to participate in important mentoring activities throughout the year, be offered a paid summer internship, and be offered full-time employment at SelectHealth upon graduation (contingent upon meeting HR requirements).

SelectHealth will award six two-year scholarships each year

The SelectHealth Scholarship award is $2,500 per semester, which can be used for

  • Tuition and fees
  • Books
  • Supplies
  • Other educational expenses
  • Awarded students will be offered a paid summer internship
  • Awarded students will receive individual professional mentorship from SelectHealth
  • Upon earning an associate degree at SLCC, SelectHealth Scholarship graduates will be offered a job at (contingent upon meeting HR requirements)
  • Students who choose to transfer to a four-year institution will be offered tuition-reimbursement benefits if they pursue school while working at SelectHealth

To qualify for the SelectHealth Scholarship, students must:

  • Identify as Hispanic or Latinx
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have a 3.0+ GPA
  • Be a graduate from a Salt Lake area school district: Jordan, Canyons, Murray, Granite, or Salt Lake City
  • Have a goal to graduate with an associate degree within two years
  • Demonstrate dedication to improving our community through civic engagement and community service.

The Pepsi Generation Excellence Cash Award - SLCC
The Pepsi Generation Excellence Cash Award may be received once during your enrollment at SLCC and/or SAT. If you are not selected, you may submit a new application for the next semester. Award amounts will be based on expected enrollment. All applicants will be notified, by mail, after scholarship recipients are determined. You must meet the following requirements to be considered:

  • Be admitted to Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) as a matriculated student or enrolled in a full-time program at the School of Applied Technology (SAT).
  • Complete a minimum of 12 credit hours at SLCC with a 2.00 cumulative grade point average or achieve satisfactory progress at 25% of a SAT program.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or international student in lawful F-1 status.
  • Attach two recommendation forms from individuals with direct knowledge of our abilities, accomplishments and potential.

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes
Each year, the Barron Prize welcomes nominations of public-spirited young people who meet the following criteria:

  • Winners must have organized and led an extraordinary service activity which has clearly benefited other people or the planet we share.
  • The service activity must have been initiated and motivated primarily by the winner himself or herself.
  • The service activity cannot have been done solely to complete an assignment for school or work.
  • Winners must have:
    • demonstrated positive spirit, courage, intelligence, generosity, and high moral purpose.
    • shown initiative, tenacity, and unselfishness in pursuit of their goals.
    • accomplished something with inspirational value - something that could inspire others to make a difference.
    • done more than survive a difficult personal challenge. Their heroism must have made an impact on the world beyond themselves.
  • Winners may or may not have received recognition for their heroic work. Fame itself shall not have been a motivating factor.
  • Winners must have participated in their heroic work within the 12 months prior to the nomination deadline of April 15.
  • Winners must be between the ages of 8 and 18 (not yet age 19) on the nomination deadline.
  • Winners must be permanent residents of the U.S.A. or Canada.
  • Winners must be nominated at individuals. The Barron Prize cannot accept nominations from large groups of young people.

The BYU Management Society - Salt Lake City Chapter will be awarding several scholarships in 2020 to candidates who demonstrate financial need, academic excellence, leadership and positive community or religious service. Scholarship amounts range from $1000 to $3,000 depending on needs and merit.

Utah Boys State Program
This program is an exercise in Citizenship, Self-Government and Public Service.  This program is open to students who have completed their JUNIOR year and have at least one semester remaining as a SENIOR.  Some benefits for participants include upon graduation receiving three semester hours of 2920 political sciences university credit that are generally transferable to most universities in the US.  The program is held on the Weber State University campus in Ogden.  The tuition is $375 per student.  The dates are June 8 to June 12, 2020.
